A Year From Now...

May 2013 - Honolulu Triathlon

Due to the generosity of friends from Japan and the support of my family, I was able to join a team for the Honolulu Triathlon last month.  日本人の友人の寛大さと家族の支援があるので、先月ホノルルトライアスロンのためにチームに参加することができました。

Swimming practice at Ala Moana Park was great preparation for race day. アラモアナ公園で水泳の練習は、レース当日のために偉大な準備だった。

The event began before the Waikiki sunrise – 5:45 AM start!  イベントはワイキキ日の出の前を始めた - 5:45のスタート！

Due to an excellent course and ideal conditions, I was able to enjoy a good pace and finish in 2:43.  Very nice!  優れたコースと理想的な天気のために、2時43分には良いペースと仕上がりを楽しむことができました。非常に素晴らしい！

Gaining support and advice from experienced teammates was a unique and rewarding experience.  I am very grateful to everyone for their kind support!  I am looking forward to the next event!  経験豊富なチームメイトからのサポートやアドバイスを得ることは、ユニークでやりがいのある経験だった。皆さん、心から、深く感謝いたします！次のイベントを楽しみにしています！

Commencement into the future ~ - ~ - ~ - ~ Shanghai, China, World

Hats off! to Concordia International School Shanghai for their wonderful contribuation to Jonah's education. Actually, to all the high schools who have been busy preparing our youngsters for their next steps in life.  We need these educators to help us raise these children to be responsible global citizens. And happy, sucessful people. 

最近ジョナは高校から卒業しました。学校はすばらしいだので、新しい生活をできると思います。

After the weird year that we just completed, I'm super glad to celebrate the graduation from high school of my youngest child. Hand in hand with that joy, is the bittersweet feeling of watching these friends greet change and all of its scary and exciting elements at once.  Jonah had several good solid friendships develop during his two years in Shanghai.

一年間は少しい難しかったので、卒業することから、うれしいです。この四人友達たちは一人で怖いチャレンジをやってみるので、大丈夫と思います。

I love the energy and positive vibes you get around people this age, nothing is impossible to them. I think that their world view, and diverse experiences could lead to solving some of its problems some day, or averting disasters, such as war and poverty. But at least, and at best, I want them to enjoy a happy future, and keep in touch with their friends. 

The Cougar Returns October 2012

When I was 16 years old, I bought my first car: a 1969 Mercury Cougar with a 5.7L V8 engine.  While living in Asia for 12 years, the car was stored in a garage in Tennessee.  Thanks to the amazing help of my best friend Neil, the engine came back to life!  What a blast!  The Cougar lives again!

16歳だったとき、私の最初の車を買った：1969 Mercury Cougar. アジアに住んでいる12年の間に、車はテネシー州のガレージに格納されていました。友人ニールのおかげで、車のエンジンが復活した。すごく楽しかった！このcougar が戻りました！

 

Back from Guam ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Shanghai

Four days later, Jonah is back from Guam with his coaches and his team, having had a great experience at the Asia Pacific Invitational Cross Country Championship.  This event included students from 28 regional international schools.  There were many teams from Japan, several from China, as well as teams from the Philippines, Hong Kong, Korea, and of course, Guam.  It turns out, that Jonah's previous school, ASIJ, took top honors at the event, Wow!!  But we are very proud of Concordia's efforts.  For a relatively young and small school, they performed very well up against some relative giants.  It's all in fun.  And sounds like it really was a fun time for all involved.

四日間後に、ジョナとチームはグアムから帰りました。アシアの太平洋の招待客大試合はとても良い経験と思います。２８つ校は遊びに会いました。たくさん日本の学校のクロスカントリーチームは来たので、中国とかフィリビン諸島と、韓国と、ホンぐコンぐ、そしてグアムから来ました。そうそう、東京のアメリカンスクールと言うジョナの前の学校は一番の賞を買ったので、おめでとうございます。でも、ジョナの新しい学校はよく努力したので、若くて、小さい学校だから、それも、よかったと思います。お疲れ様です。

Of course, since I didn't get to go to Guam, I have to borrow a picture from one of Jonah's friends who was there with him on the beach.  Here is the "Reunion" picture.  All the ASIJ team, plus Jonah who is in now in Shanghai, Talya who is now in Manila, and George who is now in Seoul.  These kids sure get around.  もちろん、グアムに行かなかったから、ジョナの友達からビーチの写真を使いました。下のは再会の集いの写真です。殆ど皆はアメリカンスクール日本で、ジョナは上海に引っ越した、タリアはマニラに引っ越した、そしてジオジはソールに引っ越しました。皆はどこでも行くの。

 

Little Fat Sheep ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Shanghai

Matt, Martin's good friend since engineering college, took me out for hot pot when he was here in Shanghai on business.  Little Fat Sheep  小肥羊.  Thanks Matt, let me know any time you're in town.  マットはマーティンの友達です。工学の大学校に一緒に行きました。そして、出張から上海に来たので、おいしいホットポットを食べに行きました。小肥羊と言うレストランに行ったので、皆は小さくて太い羊を言います。

It was really yummy.  I don't like leaving mutton there on the table, but the portions were so generous, and I couldn't eat another bite.  Ordering from the Chinese menu is sure a challenge, the chinese characters having really gotten very small in the last couple of months since I got back to Shanghai.  Next time I'll bring my magnifying glass.  The staff spoke hardly any English, but they were so nice, and let us point to our hearts content.　　とても美味しかったです。マトンは重いだから、全部を食べることができない。メンユーはすごく難しかったので、漢字はちっちゃなだけど、最近目が悪くなったと思います。泣！次の時に、拡大鏡を持って来るつもりです。スタフは英語を話せないが、皆はとても親切だので、大丈夫なった。

 

And this lovely lady, a customer, came over to help, she gave us some great advice about the broths and the sauces.  そして、他のゲストは英語と連絡をしたかったので、ソースと汁の説明をしました。よくなりました。

Night Ride to Hot Pot . . . . .Shanghai

So, the bike as a form of daily transportation is something I haven't experienced for awhile, but I am feeling stronger and more balanced, and have been riding my bike quite a bit.  Last night after dark, my friend and I rode our bikes to a restaurant that she knows.  As we went through the tunnels under the highway, and crossed unlit and typically chaotic intersections, I thought of my many night skates in Tokyo over the years.  It had been both exciting and terrifying to move so quickly at night, almost feeling your way along in some places, hurtling into the darkness on the path next to the river, trusting.  This was not quite so bad, we rode the bikes slowly.  (For my sake, I'm sure.)  The autumn festival lanterns above, hang in the entrance of our compound.  The rest of the twenty minute ride was much darker.  最近、よく元気になったので、もっと自転車に乗ります。昨日晩に暗がりで中国人の友達と自転車でレストランに行きました。乗りながら、昔の東京のナイトスケートを思い出しました。ちょっと危ないから、少しい怖かったです。でも、あのナイトスケートの追走は懐かしいので、面白いです。上の写真のたくさんランプは秋の祭りで近所の門にかけました。レストランは２０分でかいて、もっと暗いです。

Jessie and I had a great time eating Hot Pot, at a restaurant I would have never gone into by myself. She made sure that I understood the ordering process and even translated all of the pertinent items on a sheet, so next time I can take Jonah there, and we can enjoy Hot Pot again.  It's great to have a Chinese friend like Jessie.  中国人の友達と言うジェシー一緒にホットポットを 食べに行きました。あのレストランは一人で無理ので、ジェシーとやさしくて、美味しかったです。もう、ジェシーは注文をする方を説明をしたので、メンユーを訳しました。そうすると、次の時に、ジョナと一緒に行って、楽しむと思います。とてもやさしい友達です。

Martin's Sunday Morning Bike Gang . . . . . . . Shanghai

Martin took his favorite bike to Michigan, but he still has a bike here in Shanghai.  Great chance to meet up with his old gang.  一番好き自転車はミシガン州に送ったが、まだ上海に自転車があるので、日曜日に前のグルップと乗りました。

Friends _ _ _ _ _ Tokyo

We had barely four days in Tokyo, but we were able to meet up with several friends.  It was not nearly enough time, and we are looking forward to going back soon and staying longer.　Maybe next March.　東京にいるの 四日だけは十分じゃない時間ですが、たくさん友達たちに会ったできました。次に、長い時間に泊まって欲しいです。たぶん、来年の3月。

Many skater friends gathered on Sunday to meet us.  Next time I will give you more notice.  日曜日に沢山いいスケータ友達に会ったので、次の東京に行く前に、もっと連絡をするつもりです。

On Monday, we met with the Sakaguchi's, the Kanda's and the Matsui's.  All great long time friends, and had a wonderful lunch at Yumiko-san's table.  Sorry we didn't get to see Kazuko-san this time.  

月曜日に、ゆみこさんの家に、さかぐちさんと、かんださんと、まついさんも、会いました。皆は長い時間の友達たちと、一緒においしいランチを食べました。大変ですが、今度和子さんに会わなかった。

Thank you, Martin _ _ _ _ _ Tokyo

Thank you, Martin, for bringing me to Tokyo twelve years ago, and now again, four days ago.  It is an ongoing adventure being your partner in life.  Today is the day we go our separate ways, but only in one sense.  I'm sure we will make the best of the opportunities coming our way this upcoming year, and Less than "A Year From Now", we will go forward.  

マーティンへ、。12年間前に、東京に連れっていた ので、四日前も連れっていて、くれてありがとうございます。あなたの妻だから、いつも冒険です。今日から、別々の方向に行っているが、ちょっと違います。次ぐ年間の機会を取って貰ってがんばりましょう。一年か以上に、一緒にやります。
